According to the National Health Surveillance System, of those over 6,250 infections, more than 4,770 do not present warning signs, over 1,370 have warning signs, and 103 are classified as severe cases of dengue. So far, four deaths have been reported from this mosquito-borne disease, primarily caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, three of which were minors and one was an adult, the source lamented.
Amy Tovar, head of the Vector Program, urgently called on the public to strengthen preventive measures, especially eliminating breeding sites for the dengue-transmitting mosquito by frequently cleaning vacant lots and containers that collect water.
The doctor emphasized the importance of vaccinating children, as Honduras is one of the few countries in the region with the dengue vaccine, which, she asserted, is safe and effective.
At the end of March, the Ministry of Health launched the childhood dengue vaccination campaign, which initially covers the cities of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.
The head of the Metropolitan Health Region, Dr. Gilberto Ramirez, emphasized that, in all of the Americas, Honduras is the fourth country to launch a dengue vaccination campaign for children.
