Rubio confirmed at a hearing in the US House of Representatives that a sanction against De Moraes was “under consideration” and would be a “strong possibility.”
The US secretary of State does so taking into account the stance of the Brazilian judge against digital platforms, what the Donald Trump administration considers an attack on freedom of expression.
A ban on De Moraes’ entry into the US and the confiscation of any assets in American cities would be on the list of measures, he explained.
This issue became part of the considerations of the Brazilian government, which believes that any possible action by Washington must be seen as an attack on sovereignty, and not just an individual act against a fellow countryman.
“Brazil is a sovereign nation that bases its foreign relations on the principles of non-intervention, self-determination, and equality among states,” refers a statement from the PT Party in the Chamber of Deputies, signed by its leader Lindbergh Farias.
Journalist Jamil Chade, a columnist for the UOL website, believes that the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will treat any potential sanction against De Moraes as “external interference” in Brazil’s domestic affairs and an attack on the country’s sovereignty, and not just as an act against a judge.
