Latin American Gramscian Studies Meeting Continues in Cuba

Havana, May 23 (Prensa Latina) The Latin American and Caribbean Gramscian Studies Meeting, in its fourth edition, includes today research workshops, in which scholars debate on the thought of the Italian philosopher and former congressman Antonio Gramsci, among other issues.

This event, organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Gramscian Studies, the Cuban Institute of Cultural Research Juan Marinello and Casa de las Americas, is focused on The Theory of Hegemony and the Gramscian Conception of Revolution: Developments and Controversies.

Twenty-eigh scholars from several Latin American countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Italy, and Peru, are participating in this event.

The aim of this activity is to strengthen the study of Gramscian thought and its application to Latin American reality in the midst of global change and challenges.

Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party established in 1921, became its secretary and one of that political institution’s leading figures.

Imprisoned in Turin under the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini in 1926, he is considered one of the most prominent theorists of Marxism due to his contributions to concepts like cultural hegemony, the hegemonic bloc, and postmodernism in relation to consumer society.

The Latin American and Caribbean Gramscian Studies Meeting will run until May 30.
