According to the information released, the National Electoral Institute (INE) received from December 13 of last year to last May 21, a total of 316,498 applications to assume that first role, of which 139,538 were accepted.
Of that total, 84,411 correspond to women, 55,098 to men and 29 to non-binary persons.
Jorge Montaño, president of the temporary commission of the process towards the appointment before the polls on June 1, said that the verification of the observers’ compliance with the requirements is a detailed procedure.
The objective resides in “ensuring that this figure is maintained as a mechanism of citizen participation that collaborates with the transparency and certainty of the processes”, Montaño, adding that 62,552 applications did not comply with the legal requirements.
