A statement from the Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) confirmed the detection of the virus in samples collected from suspected patients in the town of Moyale, Oromia region, involving a 27-day-old baby.
The statement explains that a subsequent examination revealed that the newborn’s mother was exposed to the infection because the father recently traveled to a neighboring country.
The investigation to trace his contacts and identify the areas visited by the subject are ongoing.
Both the baby and the mother are receiving medical care and monitoring at a previously designated isolation center and, so far, are not experiencing serious health complications, the statement said.
The Ministry of Health and EPHI emphasized that they had previously carried out preventive activities since the beginning of the Mpox outbreak in parts of the continent, including the creation of an Emergency Coordination Center within the institute.
