Pan-American Parliamentary Meeting underway in Uruguay

Montevideo, May 27 (Prensa Latina) Legislators from the Americas are meeting in Uruguay to explore the role of parliaments in the face of current challenges.

This will be the 21st Plenary Assembly of ParlAmericas, a Canada-based institution that promotes parliamentary diplomacy in the Pan-American sphere.

The social and economic consequences of a rapidly changing world undergoing political confrontation, its pressures on governance models, demographic changes, the effects of climate change, the expansion of the digital revolution, and the transformations caused by Artificial Intelligence will be subjects for debate among parliamentarians.

The forum will consider “anticipatory governance” and open parliament as complementary frameworks “to strengthen the capacity of parliaments to effectively address emerging challenges and opportunities” to develop inclusive policies.

The assembly, which will run until May 29, will also host the 9th Open Parliament Network Meeting. ParlAmericas considers Open Parliament a form of interaction with citizens that fosters parliamentary openness in favor of transparency, access to public information, and accountability.

Miriam Brito, who chairs the Commission for the Assistance to Local Bodies of People’s Power of the Cuban Parliament, is Cuba’s representative in the forum.
