Worrying increase in cholera cases in Sudan

Khartoum, May 28 (Prensa Latina) Cholera cases in Sudan increased worryingly in recent days, medical sources announced here.

The non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported the day before a new outbreak that has already infected some 2,500 persons, including 172 fatalities.

MFS also said that the disease caused the main damage here in Khartoum and nearby Odurman, although cases were detected in other provinces.

According to Sudan’s coordinator for MSF, Joyce Bakker, the epidemic began earlier this month and has grown in strength, with too many patients already in critical condition arriving at health centers.

The MSF official called for international assistance including new temporary health facilities, water and hygiene programs.

Cholera is a rapidly developing and highly contagious waterborne infectious disease that causes diarrhea and leads to severe dehydration and possible death within hours when left untreated, as reported by the World Health Organization on Wednesday.
