On the occasion, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Dion George, is expected to officially present South Africa’s inaugural Coastal Climate Change Adaptation Response Plan (CARP).
The CARP, the Ministry recalled this week in a statement to that effect, is South Africa’s first sectoral climate adaptation plan dedicated to climate resilience.
It has been developed in line with the Climate Change Act (number 22 of 2024), the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and key international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, it is founded in the text.
According to the Ministry, the launch aims to raise public awareness of the dual threats posed by climate change and plastic pollution to coastal ecosystems, while showcasing CARP’s integrated, science-based approach to strengthening coastal resilience.
This year’s World Environment Day is being commemorated in South Africa in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
