Fighting in DRC leaves 15,000 people without water

Kinshasa, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) Some 15,000 people in the Walikale territory, in North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), remain without drinking water due to fighting between rebels and local militias.

According to Radio Okapi, civilians in the towns of Buleusa, Katrisa, Bushimba, Kilambo, Kibati, and Kiteku have been without water for over a week, as clashes between the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Wazalendo militia destroyed infrastructure.

The fighting has increased in intensity since last week and is preventing technical teams from accessing the area where the main spring is located to evaluate the damage and carry out repairs.

Due to necessity, many families are turning to untreated water sources, increasing the risk of epidemics such as cholera and others present in the region.

Radio Okapi reported that local health centers are also affected and are struggling to provide basic medical care.
