According to Edwin Jacinto, the deputy director of operations for the Guatemalan police, the officers at the scene were alerted by neighbors, prompting them to go to the border with Mexico after observing the entry of vehicles unrecognized by residents. They arrived at the scene 10 to 15 minutes later, Jacinto told Emisoras Unidas.
Also according to Jacinto, the team proceeded to carry out the actions established in the protocols to try to mediate or determine what was happening. However, after the police arrived at the area, the armed clash occurred in a “fraction of seconds.”
The police are working to clarify some issues to further address any questions that may arise based on the videos, the deputy director of the PNC emphasized.
Mexican Defense Minister Henry Sáenz stated that a pursuit by the Mexican police against alleged criminals led them to enter Honduras due to “the operational impetus they brought.”
The Governor of the Mexican state of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez, accused the Guatemalan police of allegedly being “in collusion” and “at the service of criminal groups.”
A note of protest was sent to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the incursion of members of Mexico’s Immediate Reaction Force (PAKAL) into Guatemalan territory.
Authorities from both nations confirmed that they will resume bilateral security discussions to address various points in this area.
