Costa Rica supports UN resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza

San José, Jun 13 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rica signed a UN General Assembly resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces.

149 member states supported the resolution, while 12 voted against it and 19 abstained.

The resolution was presented by a group of countries led by Spain and Palestine and comprised of Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. It also demands the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, and the unrestricted entry of large-scale humanitarian aid.

The resolution deplores the Israeli government’s decision to block humanitarian access since March 2nd, 2025, affecting more than two million people. It also warns of the current catastrophic humanitarian situation, characterized by famine, lack of medicines, a collapsed healthcare system, and mass displacement.

The General Assembly recalled the provisional measures of the International Court of Justice in the “South Africa-Israel case”, which warned of the real risk of genocide, and demanded that urgent assistance be guaranteed to the civilian population of Gaza.

The resolution expresses support for the current diplomatic efforts to restore the ceasefire and facilitate a process that includes prisoner exchanges, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the return of displaced persons.

The document condemns the practice of using starvation as a method of warfare, the denial of humanitarian access, and attacks against civilian objects, and recalls that such actions violate international humanitarian law.

The resolution reaffirms the commitment to a two-state solution, rejects any attempt at demographic or territorial change in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and demands an end to settlements, demolitions, and the forced displacement of the Palestinian population.
