The Syrian parliament was dissolved with the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024. To date, the country has no legislative institution.
Under the presidential decree No. 66, the new Commission is headed by Mohammad Taha Al-Ahmad and is composed of 10 members.
In addition to being in charge of setting the requirements to choose lawmakers, the Supreme Commission will set up electoral sub-committees to elect only 100 of the estimated 150 legislators of the Assembly.
The decree defines that the new lawmakers will be “notables and intellectuals, and the quota of each province depends on the number of its inhabitants. In that direction, Aleppo will have 20 seats, Damascus City 11, Damascus-countryside 10, Homs 9, and eight seats in Hama.
The order also stipulated that one-third of the members would be appointed by the President of the Republic.
The new legislative institution will function in the country during the transitional period of five years in accordance with the Constitutional Declaration.
