The United States between protests and military parade

Washington, June 14 (Prensa Latina) Today will be a day of contrasts in the United States: more than 2,000 protests against Donald Trump's policies and a military parade in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Army, which coincides with the president's 79th birthday.

The demonstrations, including in the country’s capital, are expected to spread throughout the country under the name “No Kings” with the aim of “honoring civil liberties for all,” according to the organizers.

In addition, they will express their open rejection of deportations, the United States’ complicity with Israel in the genocide in Gaza, the drastic cuts that resulted in federal employee layoffs, and the dismantling of federal agencies.

The protests were called by the 50501 Movement (“50 States, 50 Protests, One Movement”), formed, as they define themselves, by people interested in defending democracy against what they call Trump’s authoritarianism.

“No King’s Day is a day of national rebellion. From cities to small towns, from stairwells to courthouses to community parks, we are taking action to reject authoritarianism and show the world what democracy truly looks like,” they state on their official website.

What began as widespread raids in Los Angeles and its surroundings last week has become a flashpoint that has sparked a hotbed of protests.

Trump deployed thousands of California National Guard members to the city, and 700 Marines were also mobilized. About 400 immigrants have been detained since June 6 by federal authorities in Southern California.

“Everyone is in shock,” said a reverend who recorded a video of an arrest in his church parking lot. “We never imagined that this would literally come to our doorstep,” according to press reports.

Meanwhile, on his Truth Social network, the Republican president announced the parade that will take place in Washington, D.C., this Saturday. It will be “spectacular” and will go down in history as the biggest and best parade ever seen here, he said. The approximate cost of this event could reach up to $45 million.

An estimated 200,000 people are expected to attend the parade, which will be open to the public with free admission.
