In a message posted on his social media account, X, President Petro thanked the aforementioned court for its democratic work and asserted that the law that will be reviewed again was drafted with the well-being of three million seniors who currently do not receive any type of income in mind.
“Initiated this year, Colombia’s new pension system can reach 100 percent coverage of pensions and pension bonuses for senior citizens in two years,” he emphasized.
On the other hand, he sought the understanding and appealed to the sensitivity of political organizations that disagree with the Executive Branch to analyze the content of the law.
“I ask the Democratic Center and Radical Change parties, and the members of Congress who have individually opposed it, this time in response to a rectifiable objection and orders issued by the Court to Congress and the Government, to unite and unanimously vote in favor of this reform,” he urged.
Last Tuesday, the Colombian Constitutional Court returned Law 2381 of 2024, or Pension Reform, to the House of Representatives for its fourth debate, considering the legislative body’s conduct to be flawed.
President Gustavo Petro welcomed the ruling, as the court choose to request a re-examination instead of completely annulling the law, as feared.
