The international organization emphasized the need to take measures to maintain and accelerate progress in tobacco control, and according to its report, currently more than 6.1 billion people (three quarters of the world’s population) are protected by at least one of these policies.
WHO points out that this is a different situation from 2007, when only one billion people were covered.
Since that year, 155 countries have implemented at least one of the tobacco control measures in the WHO’s MPOWER plan to reduce tobacco consumption to the level considered best practice.
WHO also warns about the growing interference of the industry, which calls into question tobacco control policies and efforts.
According to its data, smoking is responsible for more than seven million deaths per year worldwide.
