Hunger spreads in Gaza due to the Israeli blockade

Ramallah, 29 Jun (Latin Press) The director general of the Health Ministry in Gaza Strip, Munir al-Barsh, today denounced the deaths of 66 children due to lack of food as a result of the blockade imposed by Israel on that Palestinian territory.

The occupation enjoys killing them, he said in statements published by the Shehab news agency.

Al-Barsh warned that the most vulnerable groups, especially children, are the main victims of the ongoing aggression, which began in October 2023.

These figures reflect the depth of the humanitarian crisis facing Gaza’s residents because the army is deliberately preventing food and medicine from entering, he said.

The official cited reports from the World Food Security Programme, according to which 1.2 million Palestinians in Gaza suffer from food insecurity, including 785,000 children.

Since the closure of the Gaza crossings, 8,923 cases of child malnutrition have been reported, he warned.

The doctor noted that catastrophic conditions are not limited to children, but also include thousands of patients waiting to be sent abroad for health treatment.

In this regard, it revealed that at least 546 patients died in Gaza due to lack of adequate treatment.

Israel is not content with preventing food entry, it also attacks civilians trying to access aid, he criticized.

In a report released last week, the United Nations Children’s Fund revealed that one in five babies in the coastal enclave are born premature or underweight due to malnutrition and the collapse of health and sanitation services.

Nearly 11,000 pregnant women face famine in the Gaza Strip and 17,000 more need urgent treatment for acute malnutrition, he said.

The institution noted that 1.9 million people in the Gaza Strip, 90 percent of the total, were forced to flee their homes by the war.
