According to the media outlet, in a peace motion tabled by the union’s Paddington (London) branch, the unionists urged Labour government ministers to commit to working for a diplomatic, negotiated, long-term peace settlement.
Despite the Conservative government’s defeat to Labour in the 2024 general election, the UK continues to play a belligerent role in international affairs, providing British-made weapons, military support, loans and billions of pounds of public funds in a failed attempt to defeat Russia militarily in Ukraine, the letter states.
Members of the UK’s influential transport union said they reject the policy of downgrading living standards to fund a never-ending and escalating war that nearly led to nuclear Armageddon last year.
An RMT spokesman explained that the initiative called for de-escalation in conflict zones around the world: in Gaza, Yemen and Iran, as well as in Ukraine.
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey stressed that he fully shares the union’s position.

The Russian Embassy in the UK has repeatedly stated that Russia does not pose a threat to the UK and has urged London to stop fomenting anti-Russian sentiment to increase its own military budgets.
