The program, which covers seven congresses and an exhibition fair under the motto ‘More awareness for a healthy environment’, will run until July 6 and will focus on vital issues such as the confrontation to climate change, impact and resilience to this phenomenon, environmental education, meteorology, science and innovation, among others.
With an opening conference the Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), Armando Rodriguez, received the participants, who offered an overview of the laws and initiatives implemented by the Cuban state for the protection and conservation of biodiversity.
The president of the Environment Agency (AMA) of Citma, Maritza Garcia, stressed that this important scientific event takes place at times of strong international tensions, which are also affected by environmental consequences.
He specified that 120 foreign delegates from 17 countries and 442 Cubans from all provinces attend the Convention.
Garcia highlighted that the event has accumulated three decades of uninterrupted activity and in that time it has brought together more than 11,000 participants from 60 nations.
In her speech, the president of AMA considered that in Cuba there is a broad political will regarding the protection of the environment and this is demonstrated by the plan dedicated to confronting climate change.
However, stressed Garcia, the unjust economic financial and commercial blockade that for more than 60 years the government of the United States has exercised on Cuba every day tries to drown us, and yet, the country is striving to develop itself in the scientific and environmental fields while sharing its achievements and experiences, he said.
The specialist noted that the meeting will exchange views and experiences between Cuban and foreign delegates on environmental issues affecting the world, and at the same time it will be a show of solidarity and communication among countries.
In the morning, 59 prominent young people and figures with a relevant career in the sector in Cuba were recognized.
Recognition was also sent to the revolutionary leader Raul Castro for his drive in the country to the state plan and macro-project of confronting climate change, known as Task Life (Tarea Vida).
