Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Chief of Staff, Gergely Gulyas, explained that while the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), following statements by US President Donald Trump, that removed Ukrainian membership from its agenda, the EU maintains irresponsible pressure to admit Kyiv.
Ukraine’s future is not in the Atlantic Alliance, but some insist on incorporating it into Europe without complying with the criteria, he stated at a press briefing.
Gulyas recalled that 95 percent of participants in a Hungarian referendum rejected Ukrainian accession, and underscored that any decision requires unanimous consensus.
We will not accept rushed negotiations while the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia continue to be violated, he warned, alluding to historical tensions with Kiyiv.
Local analysts state that Hungary’s stance reflects its alignment with Trump’s skepticism about NATO, its resistance to Euro-Atlantic influence in Central Europe, and its defense of national sovereignty against dictates from Brussels.
Orban, the only EU leader who maintains relations with the Kremlin, has already blocked six military aid packages for Ukraine.
