The measure responds to the Israeli cabinet’s decision to intensify its offensive in the Palestinian territory, which, according to Merz, makes it difficult to guarantee objectives such as the release of hostages and humanitarian improvements.
Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism, but it must also prevent further suffering to civilians, the German leader affirmed, demanding greater access to humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Merz reiterated his rejection of a possible Israeli annexation of the West Bank and stressed that the Palestinian Hamas movement cannot have a future in the region.
Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved plans to expand military control over Gaza.
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with more than 61,258 dead and 152,045 injured since October 7, 2023.
According to the local news agency DPA, several governments fear that the sanctions will affect cooperation in security and technology, as Israel is the main non-EU partner in military innovation.
