The organizing committee recalled that the M20 is an independent joint program of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) and the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), aimed at addressing the leading challenges currently facing the media ecosystem and information integrity.
The official statement issued by both institutions noted that the M20 Summit will offer a platform to analyze crucial issues threatening the quality and veracity of information, as well as the safety and viability of the media.
Among the issues to be discussed are disinformation linked to climate change, the impact and implications of artificial intelligence (AI), and content generated through deepfakes, the safety of journalists, the economic sustainability of the media, and the problem of misogyny in the digital and cyber environment.
The text stated that the M20 is established as an autonomous space for reflection and dialogue that seeks to promote responsible journalism and strengthen guarantees for the exercise of the right to information, in a global context where threats to media activity are multiplying due to rapid technological evolution and growing social polarization.
The holding of the M20 Summit in Johannesburg coincides with the holding of the G20 summit in the same city this year, making South Africa a focal point for international debate on strategic issues.
