The territories to benefit from the decision are located in the state of Espírito Santo; the tragedy, considered by many to be one of the worst environmental disasters in the South American giant, occurred in 2015 in Mariana, Minas Gerais.
This initiative seeks to address the social and health consequences that persist a decade after the dam collapsed. The dam was operated by the Samarco mining company, owned by the multinational Vale and the Australian-British company BHP.
According to Agencia Brasil, Health Minister Alexandre Padilha explained that the funds come from a court settlement imposed on the entities responsible for the environmental crime.
He specified that the renegotiation was carried out between public authorities and the companies involved (Samarco, Vale, and BHP) within the framework of the so-called New Rio Doce Agreement.
According to Padilha, the plan prioritizes actions to strengthen infrastructure, surveillance, and healthcare, and also takes into account initiatives in digital health, education, training, and management.
Among the main planned actions are the construction of a new hospital complex in Colatina, Espírito Santo; the creation of four Psychosocial Care Centers and two dental specialty centers; and the acquisition of equipment for two rehabilitation institutions.
