Uzbekistan and Russia plan nuclear medicine development by 2027

Taskent, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) A decree by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev outlines plans for the development of cooperation in the nuclear sector with Russia through the inauguration of a Nuclear Medicine Center in 2027.

The document, published on the website of the national legislation database Lex.uz, reportes that the project will involve specialists from the Russian State Corporation Rosatom.

Last December, the Uzbek head of State, in a message to Parliament and the people, stated that new priorities require a revision of the Uzbekistan-2030 strategy, approved in September 2023. In this regard, the text released introduces a series of additions to Mirziyoyev’s strategy.

Earlier this month, representatives of the Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan (UZATOM) and experts from Rosatom’s Construction Technologies division agreed to jointly develop a roadmap for the advancement of nuclear medicine in Tashkent.

Specifically, the plan is to equip the Uzbek atomic health institution with positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) equipment, as well as a cyclotron, a radiopharmaceutical laboratory, a gamma knife, and a cyber knife.

In June of last year, UZATOM and the Russian Berezin Medical Institute signed an agreement on the basic conditions for implementing the project to establish a Nuclear Medicine Center in Uzbekistan.
