Power restored in Dominican Republic after nationwide blackout

Santo Domingo, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) Dominican electricity sector authorities reported that the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) has been restored and technical investigation procedures have been activated to determine the causes of the event.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, specified that the system was fully stabilized at 11:53 p.m. local time on Monday, after the restoration process initiated following the incident in the morning was completed.

Santos explained that the causes of the nationwide blackout—the second in three months—will be communicated through official channels.

He assured that the recovery was carried out under strict technical criteria, guaranteeing frequency stability, the balance between load and generation, and the progressive synchronization of circuits throughout the country.

Throughout Monday, the Minister remained in continuous session at the Control Center, coordinating actions with key officials from the electricity sector.

The blackout, which began around 11:00 a.m. local time, resulted in traffic chaos due to malfunctioning traffic lights and disruptions to the Metro and Cable Car services, forcing hundreds of people to walk home and causing considerable traffic congestion.

The first official statement was issued after 2:00 p.m., following more than three hours of complaints and reports from users on social media about power outages in various parts of the country.
