According to United Nations (UN) experts, this population group is classified as being in a crisis situation as a consequence of the internal conflicts affecting this country in the Horn of Africa, and a prolonged drought over the last two years.

Adding to these problems is a drop in the amount of food aid available amid cuts in international funding, the experts added.

The report states that more than two million people are now in Phase 4, the emergency category, one step away from the catastrophic level of famine.

For its part, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned that it would suspend humanitarian assistance in Somalia by April if it did not receive new funding. This situation is exacerbated by the recent decision of the United States government to suspend food aid to Somalia and by funding shortfalls in Washington since President Donald Trump assumed his second term.
