France: LFI demands government condemn crusade against Cuba

Paris, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) Leaders and parliamentarians from La France Insoumise (LFI) party, one of the country's leading political parties, demanded on Friday the French Government to condemn the escalation of US hostility against Cuba and establish a bridge of assistance to the island.

Nearly 40 prominent figures from the organization, led by its leader, Jean-Luc Melenchon, and the initiative’s promoters, MEP Leila Chaibi and National Assembly lawmaker Rodrigo Arenas, signed an open letter with the demand, addressed to President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

They stated in the letter that France must speak out against the tightening of the blockade imposed on Cuba, based on the actions announced by the administration of US President Donald Trump in late January, which they considered a clear example of unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law.

President Trump declared on January 29 that Cuba poses an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security and announced to impose tariffs on countries that supply or sell it oil.

He later withdrew this latter decision following a Supreme Court ruling against him, though he did not abandon his crusade and the siege on Cuban hydrocarbons.

LFI denounced the devastating impact of this policy on the daily lives of the Cubans, particularly in sectors as critical as healthcare, electricity, and public transportation.

The signatories of the letter addressed to Macron and Barrot demanded that France immediately take a role in supporting the island, given its geographical proximity through its overseas territories in the Caribbean.
