Kast won the elections in December 2025 as the Partido Republicano (Republican Party) candidate with a hardline stance against migrants and crime.
His plans include cutting six billion dollars from public spending, which could affect social programs.
He has nine children, opposes abortion and euthanasia, and practices one of the most conservative forms of Catholicism.
Kast defended Augusto Pinochet’s regime, campaigned for its continuation in the 1988 plebiscite, and once declared that if the former dictator were alive, he would undoubtedly vote for him.
During his recent participation in the “Shield of the Americas” summit in Miami, he supported President Donald Trump’s interventionist policies in the region.
Kast, who succeeds Gabriel Boric, will receive the presidential sash at a ceremony at the National Congress building in Valparaiso.
The presidents of Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Uruguay, as well as King Felipe VI of Spain, among other guests, are expected to attend the inauguration.
