For the academic year that began in March, there were 21,650 students enrolled. This figure is a record, surpassing another from the previous year.
Sixty-one percent of the enrollments were women.
The 2016 enrollments were concentrated in the Faculty of Economics and Administration, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Psychology, which registered 3,180 new students.
“This figure is very high in relation to our student-teacher ratio, especially considering the space, which has other ways of managing student needs,” remarked the Dean of Psychology, Enrico Irrazábal, to the newspaper El País.
“Obviously, we are pleased that so many students want to study, particularly in areas of great complexity for our country such as mental health,” Irrazábal added, referring to a problem that “intensified” after the pandemic.
The University of the Republic (Udelar) offers more than 140 undergraduate programs and has an enrollment of approximately 160,000 students, double the number in 2007.
