Deadline for registering candidacies for the Presidency expires

Bogota, March 13 (Prensa Latina) The deadline for registering candidacies for President and Vice President of Colombia expires today, 80 days before the country's elections.

Today, the National Registry Office is scheduled to register Paloma Valencia, the candidate for the Democratic Center party, who was the undisputed winner of the Solutions Consultation, a kind of primary election in which she competed against eight other right-wing and center-right candidates.

The current senator chose Juan Daniel Oviedo, a former professor at the University of Rosario and former director general of the National Administrative Department of Statistics, as her vice-presidential running mate.

Oviedo won more than a million votes in the same consultation.

Although they appear to disagree on certain positions, judging by their public statements, Valencia’s move seeks to appeal to some of those citizens who identify as centrists by presenting a more moderate and less radical figure.

Last Wednesday, Ivan Cepeda, the candidate for the left-wing Historical Pact party, officially registered his candidacy.

He invited Aída Quilcue, an Indigenous leader from the Nasa people, to be his running mate.

While many analysts focused on how advantageous this decision might be in terms of votes, it is consistent with the politician’s rhetoric, which, since the beginning of his campaign, has emphasized how his government will prioritize the poorest sectors of society.
