Macron and Iranian President discuss de-escalation

Paris, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) French President Emmanuel Macron offered on Monday details of his phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, in which they discussed de-escalation in the ongoing war in the Middle East.

The conversation took place on Sunday, and only Macron’s version, posted on his X profile, about a conflict that entered its 17th day this Monday, following the US and Israeli aggression against Iran, is known so far.

The French president expressed, in his exchange with Pezeshkian, that only a new political and security framework will guarantee peace and security for everyone in the region.

The head of State underscored France’s view, the same one held by the West, the United States, and Israel, that Iran must renounce nuclear weapons, which Tehran claims it is not pursuing, address the threat posed by its ballistic missile program, and cease its regional and international destabilization activities.

He also urged Iran to allow that freedom of navigation be restored in the Strait of Hormuz, through which some 20 million barrels of oil, a fifth of global production, pass daily.

Macron also urged his counterpart to halt immediately what he described as unacceptable regional attacks, whether directly or through allies.

In response to the aggression launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, Iran began firing missiles and drones toward Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and Iraq, arguing that its targets are military bases and interests of Washington, and not its neighbors, who denounce this behavior.
