The esplanade of Havana’s Sports City proved too small for the crowd that filled the surrounding streets and even climbed onto rooftops to sing along to songs like “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Midnight Rambler,” and “Gimme Shelter.”
The free concert in Cuba, part of the Latin American Olé Tour, was a dream the members of the British band had cherished for months, and it took on a more serious dimension with Mick Jagger’s visit in October 2015. But it wasn’t until March of this year that, at the last minute, their “satanic majesties” included the Cuban capital in the itinerary to close the tour with a certain “tropical” flavor.
The British musicians thrilled the audience with great classics like “Satisfaction” and “Sympathy for the Devil,” at which point Jagger appeared on the stage of the Ciudad Deportiva wearing a red feathered cape to unleash all his “evil” amidst a spectacular light show. “You guys are on point,” he said at the end.
The legendary vocalist addressed the audience in excellent Spanish and thanked the island “for all the music you have given to the world.”
He also dedicated “Angie,” one of his most melodic songs, “to the romantic Cubans,” and after a touch of melancholy with “Miss You,” Jagger assured the immense crowd that they were “fantastic singers.”
The Entrevoces Choir was the only Cuban group to accompany The Rolling Stones on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” while thousands joined in the choir, as people from all over the country flocked to the Sports City.
The concert was also attended by tourists who traveled to Cuba specifically for the show, including major celebrities like Richard Gere and Naomi Campbell.
Many still remember that night of March 25, 2016, sharing photos of the concert on social media, and even the legendary British band joined in the nostalgia, sharing a video on Facebook about their visit and concert in the Cuban capital.
