Speaking in an urgent debate on the protection of children and educational institutions, Türk expressed his sorrow for the deaths of more than one hundred students in Iran due to bombings by the United States and Israel and pointed out that those who pay the highest price in conflicts are those who fail to make decisions about them.
He also reiterated that children and other civilians caught in conflicts must be protected and demanded an immediate, impartial, transparent, and thorough investigation into the attack on the school in Minab.
Senior US officials stated that the attack is under investigation.
“I demand that this process conclude as soon as possible and that its results be made public. There must be justice for the terrible harm caused,” he affirmed.
Türk considered it alarming that, during 2024, attacks against educational institutions increased by 44%, leaving 52 million children unable to attend school.
“I call on all countries to take urgent measures to protect these facilities and those who study and work in them,” he said.
“Bombs and missiles are not the path to sustainable peace. They cause death, destruction, and misery, and in many cases only deepen resentments and fuel future violence,” he added.
He also denounced the fact that US and Israeli actions damaged densely populated residential areas of Iran and destroyed civilian infrastructure.
