As part of the numerous debates at the event, which began on March 26 in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, several speakers warned of the risks of ignoring the situation in these territories following the announcement of a ceasefire.
Participating in a panel entitled “Palestinian Resistance to Genocide and Oppression by the State of Israel,” political, social, and diplomatic representatives emphasized the need to maintain international condemnation and active solidarity.
For Brazilian journalist Breno Altman, of Opera Mundi, the defense of Palestine transcends borders and can influence the future of humanity in the face of the advance of hegemonic discourses.
In that regard, his compatriot and activist Thiago Avila, of the Global Sumud Flotilla, emphasized that the violence against the occupied territories has not ceased despite the reduction in bombings.
He also called for strengthening international support efforts, including a new group of vessels to break the naval blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza.
The Palestinian ambassador to Brazil, Marwan Jebril, described the situation in Gaza as “very serious” and denounced the blockade of humanitarian aid for some 2.1 million people living in extreme conditions, “in a prison, the largest in the world, from which no one can leave or enter.”
