Leganoa expressed, in a letter addressed to Ghassan Ben Jeddou, president of the Board of Directors of Al-Mayadeen, his outrage at the murder of Al-Mayadeen correspondent Fatima Ftouni; her brother, photojournalist and contributor Mohammad Ftouni; and Al Manar TV war correspondent Ali Shuaib, on the Jezzine road.
The PL executive underscored, “What happened is undoubtedly a flagrant crime by the Israeli government, and in that sense, we demand that Tel Aviv put an end to this macabre practice against journalists and war correspondents.”
He noted that Fatima Ftouni will be remembered as “a courageous voice who stood out for her reporting amid intense fighting in southern Lebanon since the beginning of hostilities in 2023.”
Ali Shuaib, a correspondent who has covered Lebanon’s defense against Israeli aggression since its liberation in 2000, was alongside Ftouni.
Leganoa stated that the deaths of the three journalists leave “messages that are symbolic: the unwavering solidarity with the Lebanese people, stronger and more solid than the Israeli hatred; camaraderie among colleagues from several media outlets; and, most importantly, the courage of our media professionals, willing to give their lives for just causes.”
The Prensa Latina president noted that the attack “violates the principles of international humanitarian law and the regulations that protect journalists during armed conflicts, in particular the Geneva Conventions and the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).”
