In the letter, which emphasizes the idea “Cuba is not alone: a call for solidarity from Panama,” some former leaders of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), founded by General Omar Torrijos in 1979, urge against indifference to the measures taken by the Donald Trump administration, which insists on maintaining and intensifying policies aimed at economically and politically suffocating the Cuban people.
The signatories, including Mitchel Doens, Pedro Miguel Gonzalez, Hector Aleman, and Elias Rios, denounce arguments that seek to justify renewed pressure—such as labeling Cuba a supposed threat—which are intended to create a scenario conducive to the destabilization of a nation that, for decades, has defended its independence.
“Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. territory, has become a symbol of resistance and dignity for the peoples of the world. Its recent history is also the story of a people who have faced blockades, pressure, sabotage, and systematic campaigns of isolation, without relinquishing their sovereignty or their national project,” adds the text, which is also signed by Luis Gomez, former Panamanian ambassador to the Caribbean nation.
In the message, the politicians remembered that the UN General Assembly has repeatedly condemned the economic blockade imposed on Cuba, demonstrating a global consensus in favor of respect for international law and the self-determination of peoples.
“Today more than ever, it is up to Panamanians to take a firm stand. This is not merely an act of solidarity, but one of historical consistency. Just as Panama defended its right to decide its own destiny, we must also support those facing external pressures that seek to impose models contrary to their will,” the document adds.
In this vein, they urge all sectors of Panamanian society, regardless of political affiliation, to raise their voices in favor of respect, sovereignty, and justice. History has shown, they emphasize, that peoples who resist with dignity ultimately prevail.
