Peru holds general elections with 35 presidential candidates

Lima, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) Peru is holding general elections with 35 presidential candidates and the decision to return to a bicameral Congress, which grants more power to a Legislature that has impeached four presidents in the last decade.

More than 27 million Peruvians will elect the president, national and regional senators, lawmakers, and members of the Andean Parliament.

The list of presidential candidates includes well-known names such as Keiko Fujimori, of the Fuerza Popular (Popular Force-FP) party, and leftist candidate Roberto Sanchez, of Juntos por el Peru (Together for Peru) party.

Also on the list are comedian Carlos Alvarez, representing the Pais Para Todos (Country for All) party, as well as political veterans such as Rafael Lopez-Alliaga of the Renovacion Popular (Popular Renewal-RP) party, and Ricardo Belmont of the Partido Civico Popular (Popular Civic Party).

Polls published by local media outlets anticipate a runoff between Keiko Fujimori and one of the other two conservative candidates, and the rural vote could determine the fate of the candidates from the left wing, who, according to analysts, could be fragmented and diminished.

The two political currents in this nation with the greatest social influence are Fujimorism, characterized by social conservatism and economic neoliberalism, and Castillism, which revolves around the figure of Pedro Castillo, a national symbol.

However, surveys conducted by the Americas Barometer state that Peruvians believe that eight out of ten politicians are corrupt, and so far, none of the presidential candidates have reached 20 percent of the intended vote.
