The statement reads: “Despite the economic and social problems within the country, Lithuania’s political and military leadership continues militarization under the pretext of the alleged Russian threat and under the slogan of contributing to the strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank.”
The Council emphasized that Lithuania’s militarism is creating tension near the borders of Russia’s Kaliningrad region.
The Russian Security Council revealed that the Lithuanian Army was creating a new troop division in the city of Ukmerge, in the center of the country, with officers trained in Germany and expqqected to have 20,000 soldiers by 2030.
According to Lithuania’s political and military leadership, the division “is now prepared for NATO operations in its front zone,” the statement emphasized.
Last January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned NATO countries that a provocation against Kaliningrad would be suicidal.
In December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that any threat to Kaliningrad by NATO could lead to “a large-scale armed confrontation.”
