Former Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren wrote on his X profile, “Remarkable participation by the former president in the hearing for candidates for UN Secretary-General. A source of pride for the country.”
Van Klaveren considered the government’s pettiness in withdrawing its support for a strong and internationally respected candidate to be a stark contrast.
Michelle Bachelet was the President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and was the Executive Director of UN Women.
The former president presented her program this week to the 193 member countries of the organization, where she called to renew the multilateral body and strengthen international law.
The former head of State is running for the Secretary-General post against Argentina’s Rafael Grossi, Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan, and former Senegalese President Macky Sall.
Bachelet has the support of Mexico and Brazil in her bid to succeed Antonio Guterres as head of the international body.
