In statements to the Franceinfo network, the high-ranking official specified that France has been seeking punitive measures for a year against those responsible for violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, measures that were vetoed by the soon-to-be former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
“I believe that in the coming days we will be able to adopt these sanctions,” he said, alluding to the possible unblocking of these measures by the recent election winner, Peter Magyar, who is scheduled to assume the position of prime minister in May after Orban’s 16-year term.
“I believe that in the coming days we will be able to reach an agreement on the adoption of these sanctions.” Israeli settlers have murdered Palestinians in the West Bank, where they have also destroyed and burned property, with little resistance from the occupying army.
Regarding the ongoing actions by countries like Spain to try to suspend the EU-Israel trade agreement, Barrot stated that if the Israeli government does not change its policy, “we cannot pretend nothing is happening.”
In addition to the crimes in Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces increasing condemnation and accusations from the international community for the aggression against Lebanon and the indiscriminate bombing of civilians in that country.
“Our decision would not be to suspend for the sake of suspending,” the French Foreign Minister added, insisting that it would be a collective decision.
