In April 1960, then-U.S. Under Secretary of State Lester D. Mallory, in a secret memorandum, launched a strategy aimed at “creating a climate of disappointment and discontent among the citizens of the Caribbean island toward the then-Cuban government,” criticized journalist Kamal Gaballa in an opinion piece.
The document was intended to create hunger and desperation among Cuban citizens by depriving them of their resources and trade with the outside world, he emphasized.
Gaballa stressed that the plan “not only reveals the brutality of this strategy, but also exposes the hypocrisy of all those who claim to defend the Cuban people.”
What is surprising is that 66 years after the issuance of that document, successive U.S. administrations continue to wage economic warfare against the island, he noted.
Specifically, he questioned President Donald Trump’s repeated threats against the Caribbean nation.
