Haitian businesses call for restoration of security nationwide

Port-au-Prince, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Leaders of the Association of Haitian Businesses (ADIH) urged the government to immediately restore national security, which is currently being undermined by criminal gangs operating throughout the country, according to a statement from the organization.

The business leaders’ appeal to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aime’s administration insists that the Caribbean nation return to normalcy to prevent the failure of the transition process, which has been attempting for several years to restore institutional order, the statement adds.

Without a swift restoration of security, it emphasizes, any attempt at economic recovery or an electoral process is doomed to failure.

The ADIH, whose members are considered “natural allies” of the Prime Minister, clarified that it was issuing this warning “once again” in light of the critical escalation of gang attacks, especially in the metropolitan area, the northern Artibonite region, and the Central region.

A letter to Fils Aime from four major companies also alerted authorities to the situation in these areas of high economic activity, around which “normal transit is now impossible.” The letter insists that “when such a sensitive and strategic corridor becomes so impassable that even armored vehicles cannot travel safely, it ceases to be a temporary problem.

“This constitutes a de facto disruption of an area vital to national security, economic activity, and territorial continuity.”

The ADIH, which represents thousands of direct and indirect jobs and is among the largest taxpayers, reiterated its rejection of “such a state of neglect and deterioration in the areas where they operate, employ, produce, and contribute significantly to public revenue.”
