The foreign policy website points out that, following Donald Trump’s announcement of withdrawing 5,000 soldiers from Germany, warmongering sectors in Europe and part of the US establishment are pressuring for their deployment to Poland, Romania, or the Baltic states.
Trump should ignore these calls, which contradict his security objectives and interests, the publication emphasized, adding that the transfer of a combat brigade from Germany to Poland or Romania would be an act of self-destruction that would primarily harm the United States.
Analysts consulted agree that this measure would deepen Washington’s commitment to European security and increase the risk of a direct confrontation with Russia.
For geopolitical experts, the maneuver would imply increased military spending in Eastern Europe without guarantees of real deterrence, while eroding US diplomatic influence on the continent.
Trump himself has hinted at possible further reductions in the US military presence in Europe, provided they are “strategically well thought out and without punitive intentions.”
A decision that, according to the website, would be positive if it departs from the current bellicose approach.
