Lagos referred, in an interview with Prensa Latina, to the recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to seize the island and announced the deployment of the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to its shores.
The political leader said, “I believe that the Cuban people will resist on all fronts and to the bitter end.”
Lagos considered it important for the UN to play a more prominent role in prevention, and organizations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) joined forces in that direction.
He remembered that governments like those of Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia already warned of the consequences of aggression, and Chile should also speak out because a military intervention would set a precedent that would affect us all in the future.
The PCCh leader affirmed, “Defending Cuba is defending the entire continent.”
Lagos also addressed the new executive order signed by Trump, which includes more coercive measures, even extraterritorial ones, because they affect not only the country but also companies that do business with Cuba.
