The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Tom Fletcher, shared the information on his Twitter account and emphasized the need to get ahead of this outbreak, which began in the DRC.
In his message, he stated that the humanitarian community is fully mobilized and that, as in previous outbreaks, the entire World Health Organization (WHO) team is leading the response with courage and experience, despite the complexity due to the fact that there are still no authorized vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain.
“These are challenging environments for lifesaving work. We face conflict and high population mobility. We are working to ensure safe and continuous access for frontline personnel, including to areas controlled by armed groups. It is crucial that there are no obstacles,” he stated.
He emphasized that containment depends on rapid and coordinated action at the community level, making fluid communication with governments and effective early warning and detection systems essential.
