The NGO also denounced the “extreme overcrowding and widespread infestations of rodents and insects exposing civilians to disease and increased suffering.”
The global humanitarian aid group warned that families in the overcrowded displacement camps and shelters report an increase in cases of skin diseases and lice infestations, while poor waste management, sewage overflows, and rodents are creating dangerous environmental conditions.
It noted that rodent-borne diseases, including hantavirus, pose a significant risk and require urgent prevention and surveillance measures.
The IRC pointed out that the crisis is exacerbated by fuel shortages due to the Israeli siege, which prevents the operation of sanitation systems, leading to increased sewage overflows and further deterioration of infrastructure.
