More than 345 rescuers are working at the coal mine in Shanxi, China

Changzhi, China, May 23 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Emergency Management has deployed six specialized rescue teams, comprised of approximately 345 people, who are working to save the miners trapped after the explosion in Shanxi province.

According to the latest reports, 90 people died in the explosion while more than 150 have been rescued from the site.

Around 20 injured people are being treated at the county hospital, mainly for toxic gas inhalation, one of them in critical condition.

It had previously been reported that the coal mine had exceeded safe levels of carbon dioxide underground following the explosion.

According to reports, there were 247 workers at the site at the time of the accident, but the specific circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been detailed.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for intensified search efforts, care for the injured, an investigation into the cause of the incident, and accountability.

Although China launched a campaign in 2022 to monitor safety systems in all its mines and verify compliance with measures to protect employees and prevent explosions, collapses and explosions at these sites are recurrent and consistently result in a high death toll.
