The letter, titled “Italy is debt with Cuba,” was sent to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the country’s Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci. It states that these criminal US actions “violate fundamental human rights and demand a global response.”
Italian MEP Ilaria Salis expressed in a message posted on social media that this project, boosted by the doctors of this European nation—”humane, visionary, and principled”—which already has some 1,000 signatures, is “an important solidarity initiative with Cuba that deserves the fullest support.”
The letter highlights the fact that “over decades, Cuba has built a healthcare system considered an international model, capable of guaranteeing universal access to health even under conditions of limited resources.”
However, in violation of the principle of health neutrality enshrined in international humanitarian law and universal medical ethics, which requires that coercive economic measures not affect access to healthcare, the United States has intensified its aggressive policy against Cuba, severely impacting these services.
The economic, commercial, and financial blockade, intensified by US President Donald Trump, which includes actions against energy supplies, “deprives the island of fuel, electricity, and access to international markets for pharmaceuticals and medical devices,” the letter points out.
This open letter proposes that, after evaluating this serious problem, Italy schedule “specific, essential, and prioritized aid interventions” to support Cuba’s healthcare services. jdt/oda/ort
