Peru: Fujimori and Sanchez close runoff campaigns

Lima, Jun 4 (Prensa Latina) Presidential candidates Keiko Fujimori, of Fuerza Popular (Popular Force-FP) party, and Roberto Sanchez, of Juntos por el Peru (Together for Peru-JPP) party, will close their compaigns with separate rallies ahead of the June 7 runoff, without any certainty about the outcome.

This will be their last opportunity to ask for votes, following a short campaign that intensified only after the results of the April 12 first round of voting were announced, which were made public on May 17.

Sanchez changed the venue for his final rally at the last minute because the Municipality of Lima, whose mayor is far-right Renzo Regiardo, rejected his request for permission to hold it on the central Paseo de los Heroes Navales (Naval Heroes Promenade).

The location where Fujimori will lead her campaign closing rally was leaked to the press last night. The rally will take place in the Ate district, much farther from the city center, on the esplanade outside the Monumental Stadium, the largest in the country.

Electoral regulations stipulate that marches and rallies must cease completely as of Friday, before the runoff, with the warning of penalties ranging from fines to arrest for infringers.

Saturday will be the day on which the political campaigning will come to a halt, to create a calm atmosphere that allows for reflection on the vote, and the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks will be prohibited in public places until Monday morning.
