Cuba reports two power plants out of service due to breakdowns

Havana, June 5 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Electricity Union reported that two power plants in western Cuba have gone offline due to malfunctions.

The statement from the Cuban state-owned utility, published on its official Facebook page, points out that the cause of the outages at Unit 8 of the Maximo Gomez Power Plant, located in the western municipality of Mariel, is unknown.

Similarly, the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant in Matanzas province experienced a boiler leak early Friday morning, one of the main mechanisms for power generation.

These new outages further increase the generation capacity deficit, which stood at 1,881 megawatts (MW) nationwide on the afternoon of June 4, according to the Electricity Union.

The executive orders signed by US President Donald Trump this year have significantly intensified the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, compounded by the denial of fuel imports, which has further exacerbated the problems plaguing the National Electricity System.
