Rodriguez highlighted in his address to the plenary session held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on June 4 and 5, the complexity of the different current crises and the increasing severity of environmental impacts, particularly for developing countries, which limits governments’ ability to meet their environmental goals by 2030.
The Cuban minister also urged donors to increase their financial resources predictably, tangibly, and steadily and recognized the Fund as a strategic partner for financing environmental and climate projects, indicating the government’s willingness to expand existing cooperation based on current modalities.
He announced the recent decision to establish a Steering Committee for Environmental and Climate Finance in the country, aimed at ensuring greater and more effective use of the financial resources.
Rodriguez, before concluding, vehemently denounced the latest measures implemented by the administration of US President Donald Trump, which also affect the normal functioning of early warning systems for meteorology, radiology, and seismology.
Other meetings of the GEF, such as the 71st Meeting of the Council, the 40th Meeting of the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) and the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), and the 6th meeting of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF), took place in Samarkand, alongside the 8th Assembly.
